Artworks by Paulo Alves

Paulo’s large drawings are created using charcoal on canvas, where he then ‘paints’ with charcoal using brushes, fusing a collage of patterns into a rhythmic whole.

He draws strong inspiration from the hidden world of fractals and natural forms, such as the cosmic force of the universe, visualized by the spiral design which ‘appear’ throughout his work symbolizing an infinite omnipresence.

Messengers of Sol

Paulo Alves

Born in 1969, Lisbon Portugal, Paulo Alves moved to Stockholm, Sweden at a young age where he spent most of his adolescence. He began his Fine Arts studies in the Academy of Antwerp Belgium, later finishing his B.A. of Fine Arts at the Willem De Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, Holland.

Driven by a strong desire to travel and a growing preoccupation with Buddhist principles, he traveled to Asia where he worked as an art teacher.

The exposure to numerous cultures from an early age, awoke in Paulo a concern about the fragmented sense of identity, or perception if you will, which is reflected by his cryptic and mysterious drawings. Possibly, solid elements struggle to take shape and remain ambiguous in their solitude, only to gain meaning as part of a whole.

His large drawings are created using charcoal on canvas, where he then ‘paints’ with charcoal using brushes, fusing a collage of patterns into a rhythmic whole.

He draws strong inspiration from the hidden world of fractals and natural forms, such as the cosmic force of the universe, visualized by the spiral design which ‘appear’ throughout his work symbolizing an infinite omnipresence.

Paulo is currently living in Phuket, Thailand.
