Conjuring nostalgic melancholia throughout her oil paintings and etchings, Chicago native artist Amalia Kouvalis’ artwork is heavily influenced by dreams, memories, and Victorian aesthetics. Amalia manipulates her large collection of damaged Victorian photographs by recreating them as pale, pastel oil paintings to illustrate the ethereal atmosphere she perceives within each photo. She envisions her work as time capsules, allowing the viewer to momentarily correlate the past and present.
Amalia is currently working on a series where she visually reconstructs an entry from her dream journal through drawn and photo intaglios. Each etching exposes a different layer of the dream with surrealist undertones.
Earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Amalia will be graduating December 2015.
