My name is Dec Sloan and I am a Fine Art Student studying at Manchester Metropolitan University in England.
A recent project I completed was looking at an Aristotle quote – ‘The fundamental elements of beauty are order, symmetry and definiteness’. I started with photography and took photos of what I consider to be beautiful – trees, nature and the sky – and then mirrored my images in photoshop until you had 16 copies of the original photo. It then became more about the line, shape and colour rather than the content of the photo as you saw new patterns than interlinked through the photos. I then decided to print my designs onto silk and produce scarves, which I hemmed with a complimentary colour. This tackled the last element of beauty (definiteness) as it became a form of sculpture, something that you can hold and wear, it was also a bit ironic in the fact that a scarf would be a fashion accessory and whenever you search beauty into google you end up with lots of pictures female models (something I don’t really regard as beautiful).
Here are the original images I took…
I then copied flipped and repeated the image in Photoshop to create these..
I then added some more copies of the image making a longer design, better suited for the scarves shape…
After getting the scarves printed I had some lovely friends help model them…
They were hemmed in complimentary colours…
Thanks for looking!
