God’s Eye – An Interactive Kinetic Sculpture

The rolling motion of inductive and magnetically propelled magnetic balls invites us to visualize magnetic fields that are ordinarily hidden from sight.

Reflective parabolic dishes constrain the motion of ball magnets as a variable speed (2-10hz) sine wave is sent through copper coils which drives the motion of the inside ball magnets, this further propels the motion of neighboring balls which are loosely coupled together through magnet attraction. Through the constraint of curved dishes, minimal friction and glued yarn, one can see the effect that magnets have on each other at long distances and observe the natural insect-like semi-chaotic systems dynamic that is similar to mechanisms that drive other complex systems in nature.

Audience can vary the sine frequency sent into the copper coils by varying the distance of their hand above the ultrasonic distance sensor.
