Groceries. Making story around grocery | Juhamatti Vahdersalo.
Again it was time to find something interesting to photograph and as before I decided this time aslo to use only things that I already have in my home.
Before this I saw a document that was about how different groceries are made. Big factors with endless assembly lines and hundreds of machines making the products from start to end. It was quite interesting to watch how the product changes it´s appearance all the way to another and so I had the idea to create alternative ways of making these same groceries. And when you add just a drop of humanity to it, I think thats a story.
Groceries are food (really??). They have no persona (you sure??). How do you create a story around them that creates character to these lifeless pieces of healthy little things. These were thoughts in my head when I opened my refrigerator when brainstorming themes for my upcoming project… so I picked corns, cucumbers, tomatoes etc. and started sketching.
My garage is full of pieces of wood and plastic, that´s my huge treasure chest when starting to create different kind of props. If I dont have something exact I first planned to use I still usually have something to replace it. So I dont have to think what material I should buy first, that´s big thing for me if I suddenly have time or idea that needs to be created.
As before also this time the props are made of wood and plastic. They are noway perfect or detailed but well enough for me. I think lot´s of postprocessing when creating scenes so I dont have to worry too much about little details, that way I keep the whole construction process efficient and don´t have to use more than a day from making props and scene to finished photo.
The whole process starts from sketchs. I use the photoshop to draw ideas that are in my head so I can see if they work in “real life”. When the sketch is done I start to construct the props and scene. Construction is part that takes most of the time. Then I shoot couple of frames (3-5 photos) with different light setups. I usually use one flash with beauty dish and grid so I have good control of the light. I then combine these differently lighten frames in photoshop and add things that were too detailed or easier to create in post.
The name for this serie came with the idea of gross ways making groceries…Grossceries.
