The inspiration for working with feathers was birthed from a love of nature and a passion for art.
The feathers provide a wonderful challenge on a couple different aspects. The size and shape of the canvas becomes limited, meaning working a lot of details into a relatively small area. While a piece can be made to span several feathers, each added feather creates tension in the delicate fibers. The feather structure itself also poses some issues. The fibers of the feathers must be worked with very lightly to prevent them from splitting. Once the fibers split while paint is applied, fixing the canvas is near impossible. The paint layers must also be light, as too much at one time will cause the fibers to fold in toward the feather shaft.
