Some say home is where you were born, others say it is where your loved ones are. For Vera, home is a combination of both, and Hong Kong is where she finds it. During the “Umbrella Movement” last year, Vera felt a positive vibe for the dying city. Having visited the occupied area at Admiralty, Vera has seen art being created and displayed everywhere. She was also moved by the farming by the roadsides and open lectures in the streets. Everything there, to her, were surreal and wondrous. Citizens could finally map their own city, inhabiting it in a liberal and non-predatory manner!
She chose to paint in abstract expressionism. It allows her to defy the existing and freely re-create the city she calls home. Her works are visual records of her reconstruction -even if imaginary- a city she will never forsake.

Vera completed her Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and recently obtained her Master’s degree in Visual Cultural Studies from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In the summer of 2014, she presented her first solo exhibition in Scotland, and in March 2015, she exhibited a collection of works as part of the South Island Art Night. She had her first Hong Kong solo exhibition “Hometown” in July 2015.
Vera paints in acrylic paint and is an abstract expressionist. Compared to realistic reproductions, abstractions allow Vera to question and challenge the world more boldly and imaginatively. In terms of tools, her choice is never limited to the brush. They vary from palette knives to found objects. The results are swooshes of vibrant colours and textured markings.
