My latest paintings are what I refer to as “splatter and stratum.” It is a process I’ve been experimenting with for several years. The paintings are built up over many layers, splattering, dripping and blotting solvent onto an oil painted surface to reveal the layer beneath. Then a layer of clear epoxy resin is poured on top, once the resin has cured I repeat the process of applying more layers of oil paint and using solvent to reveal what is beneath. As the layers of resin and paint build it creates a striking optical effect, enhancing the colors and magnifying different elements. Creating these paintings is a process of constant experimentation in trying to assert control over an inherently uncontrollable process, but the results are beautiful. The random drips and splatters, luminous colors and depth speak of organic and biologic forces.
