Name of Witness: Themis
In Greek mythology Themis – goddess of justice and order – is the daughter of Uranus and Gaia. She is the embodiment of divine retribution. The “Sword” in Themis’ Sculpture represents the deterrence and power of punishments issued by justice while the “Scales” represent justice and its balanced distribution. Being a “woman” and a “virgin” represents independence. More so, the woman’s eyes are tied and this represents neutrality. The Statue of Themis expresses justice in the best possible way because it symbolically bears the universal principles of law.
“Name of Witness: Justice” is an interpretation of the Themis Sculpture. Today, Themis is distraught and desperate in many parts of the world, but more so in Turkey. For her blindfold has been pulled down for her to witness the weird implementation of justice, the unwarranted detentions, the legal illegality, the unlawful laws, and the unscrupulous, prohibitive, censoring perspective that has infiltrated in every aspect of life. She is a prisoner, her scales and sword confiscated. A camera shows her drowning for being a witness however her desolate master will never serve this moment in time to his readers.
